Monday, May 25, 2015 Schiermonnikoog Island

We drove about an hour north and then took a very smooth ferry to the Schiermonnikoog island, which is a nature preserve, historic place, and small village. It was a very pretty island and we had a great day cycling about--we think about 20 miles in all.

It was about 12 miles, port to port, about 45 minutes. Those carts on the left are full of tourist luggage for hotels and camping. Very few motorized vehicles are allowed on the island.

 Our rental bikes.
 Riding into town.
 More apple pie we earned...
 Tourists.

Riding down the incline to the North Sea.
The beach might be about 1/2 mile wide.
Touching the North Sea. It was a lot warmer than I expected. Not freezing cold.  Might have to look up the temperature.

Some kites flying in the wind.

 iCheck...
 German bunker from WWII.

 Gun port.

One of the restaurants (by the lake).
 Bird houses and bug hotel.
 Windswept tree.
Pim, Geerta, Jaap, and Will (unknown couple sitting). The amount of bird calls that could be heard while standing here was amazing. This was the bird sanctuary.

 Back having lunch.
A bicycle built for three!  Dad still steers, even though he is in back.
